Privacy Policy
How we use the information we gather to give you a more relevant, more rewarding boating experience — and how we protect it.
At USA Onboard ("USA Onboard," "we," "us," or "our"), our goal is simple: to understand what genuinely interests you so we can deliver the stories, guides, and recommendations that matter most to you. This Privacy Policy explains, in plain language, what information we gather when you read and browse usaonboard.com and our newsletters, why we gather it, how we use it to improve your experience, and the choices you have.
Everything described here serves one purpose: a better, more personal experience for you as a reader. By using our website, you acknowledge the practices described in this Policy.
We do not sell your personal information. We never have, and we have no intention to.
We may share certain non-identifying, aggregated insights with carefully selected partner brands so we can keep our content free and relevant — always under strict limits, and never your contact details.
We never sell or share your contact information — your name, email, and address stay with us.
Section 01The Information We Gather
Information you give us
- When you subscribe or sign up — your name, email address, and, for the print edition, your postal address, so we can send you what you asked for.
- When you contact us — the messages and survey responses you choose to send.
Information we gather as you read
So that we can show you content you'll actually enjoy, we gather information about how you use the site:
- The topics and stories you engage with — the articles, videos, and pages you view, and the subjects you return to, so we can surface more of what interests you.
- How you read — time spent, scroll depth, and the links you click, which help us understand what's working and improve it.
- Approximate location — a general region or city derived from your IP address, so we can make content, events, and recommendations more relevant to where you are.
- Basic technical data — browser, device type, and settings, which let us deliver the site correctly and keep it secure.
- Newsletter engagement — whether our emails are opened and which links are clicked, so we can send you more of what you find useful.
We gather this information using cookies and similar technologies, with your consent where required. You can read the detail in our Cookie Policy.
Section 02How We Use It — To Improve Your Experience
Every use below comes back to the same idea: serving you better. We use the information we gather to:
- Recommend stories, guides, and videos that match your interests;
- Personalize what you see so the site feels made for you;
- Make the advertising you encounter more relevant — fewer things you don't care about, more of what fits your interests;
- Send you the newsletters and print edition you've requested;
- Understand, in aggregate, what our readers love, so we can create better content;
- Keep the site secure, prevent abuse, and meet our legal obligations.
Section 03Understanding Your Interests
To make your experience genuinely personal, we look at the kinds of content you enjoy and your general location to better understand your interests. This helps us — and the premium boating brands we work with — connect you with content and offers that are actually relevant to you, rather than generic noise.
Think of it like a knowledgeable concierge who remembers you love classic sailing yachts and live near the coast, so the next time you visit, the most relevant stories and offers are already in front of you. This is done using grouped, non-identifying audience insights — partner brands do not receive your identity or contact details, and you stay in control through your cookie choices.
This involves some automated analysis of your activity. We use it only to make content and recommendations more relevant — never to make decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you. Where the law requires it, this activity runs only with your consent, which you can change at any time (see Sections 05 and 07).
Section 04How We Share Information
We are deliberately careful here. As stated in our promise above:
- We do not sell your personal information.
- We never sell or share your contact information (name, email, postal address) with partner brands.
- We may share aggregated, non-identifying audience insights with selected partner brands — for example, that a group of readers in a region is interested in a category of yacht — so we can keep our content free and our recommendations relevant. This is always subject to strict contractual restrictions.
Beyond that, we share information only with:
- Trusted service providers — the companies that host our site, send our emails, measure engagement, and process payments on our behalf, under contracts that require them to protect your information and use it only for us;
- Legal and safety reasons — where we are required by law, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of our readers, USA Onboard, or others;
- A business transfer — if USA Onboard is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case we will notify you of any change.
Some sharing of non-identifying data for relevant advertising may be considered "sharing" under certain U.S. state laws. You can control this through your cookie choices (Section 07).
Section 05Cookies & Your Choices
We use cookies and similar technologies to run the site, remember your preferences, measure what's working, and personalize your experience as described above. You control non-essential cookies through our cookie banner, and you can change your mind at any time. For the full picture, see our Cookie Policy.
Section 06Keeping Your Information Safe
We keep your information only for as long as we need it for the purposes in this Policy or to meet legal obligations, after which it is deleted or kept in aggregated, non-identifying form. We maintain administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect it. No system is perfectly secure, but protecting your trust is a priority we take seriously.
Section 07Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the information we hold about you;
- Correct anything inaccurate or incomplete;
- Ask us to delete your information, subject to legal exceptions;
- Object to or restrict certain uses, including personalized advertising;
- Withdraw your consent at any time;
- Request a portable copy of your information;
- Opt out of the "sharing" of personal information for targeted advertising, where applicable, including via recognized opt-out signals such as Global Privacy Control.
To exercise any of these, just contact us using the details in Section 09. We'll respond within the time the law requires, and we will never treat you differently for exercising your rights.
Section 08Children & International Readers
Our website is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly gather their information. We are based in the United States and primarily serve a U.S. audience; if you read us from elsewhere, you understand that your information is processed in the United States with appropriate safeguards.
Section 09Changes & How to Reach Us
We may update this Policy from time to time. If we make a meaningful change, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, let you know.
If you have any questions about your privacy or want to exercise your rights, write to us at [email protected]. We're always glad to hear from a fellow boating enthusiast.
